Jui Tui Shrine on Ranong Road in Phuket Town is the most significant Taoist shrine on the island and the ceremonial epicentre of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, held annually in October during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The festival, believed to have begun in Kathu in 1825 when a visiting Chinese opera troupe invoked the Nine Emperor Gods to cure an illness, has grown into one of Thailand's most dramatic and widely attended events. Jui Tui is dedicated to the deity Kiew Ong Tai Teh and its elaborately decorated interior houses numerous golden altars and historical offerings. During the festival, the shrine is the starting point for street processions involving spirit mediums and firewalking ceremonies. Outside festival season it remains an active place of worship for Phuket's Chinese community.
