Koh Phi Phi Leh is the smaller and uninhabited of the two Phi Phi Islands, and one of the most visually dramatic locations in Thailand. Its defining feature is Maya Bay, a near-circular lagoon enclosed by towering limestone cliffs that gained worldwide fame as the filming location for the 2000 film The Beach. After years of severe environmental degradation caused by mass tourism, the Thai National Parks Department closed Maya Bay from 2018 to 2022 to allow the coral reef to recover. The bay has since reopened with strict visitor management including timed entry and a no-anchoring policy. Phi Phi Leh is accessible by speedboat from Phuket in around 90 minutes. The surrounding waters are clear and the reef system, while still recovering, supports healthy marine life. The island remains one of the most photographed natural landscapes in Southeast Asia.
