Maiton Island, also written Mai Ton, is a private island located about eight kilometres southeast of Phuket, owned and operated as an exclusive resort since the late 1980s. Access is by private boat from the mainland and the island has historically operated as a secluded boutique retreat. Maiton is well known among naturalists for the pod of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that regularly inhabits the surrounding waters. The island's fringing reef is in good condition and supports diverse coral and fish populations, making it an excellent snorkeling and diving destination. The surrounding sea is generally calmer than Phuket's west coast and visibility is consistently good. The island's relative inaccessibility has helped preserve its natural environment. Seahorses, pipefish, and hawksbill turtles have been observed in the reef areas around the island.
