Mai Khao is Phuket's northernmost and longest beach, stretching approximately 11 kilometres from the airport to the edge of Sirinat National Park. The beach is wide, undeveloped, and fringed by casuarina trees, with a natural, slightly wild character that contrasts sharply with the resort-heavy beaches further south. It is one of only a small number of beaches in Thailand where leatherback sea turtles still come ashore to nest, typically between November and February. Nesting areas are protected and managed by the Department of National Parks. The beach is not generally safe for swimming due to strong currents and a steep shoreline, but it is excellent for long walks, sunrise photography, and birdwatching. The JW Marriott and a handful of luxury resorts are set back from the beach on its southern stretch. A genuine retreat from the crowded west coast.
